If you are using SmartCite for Citekeys or using Papers with a BibTex file (for users writing in LaTex and similar environments), we have added the feature to autogenerate citekeys.

Note: this feature currently functions when importing references directly to the desktop application by either drag-and-dropping them into the app, using the app's "+ADD" import option or by importing from the app's "Search and Discover" section. The feature is currently not active for importing using the browser extension or when importing via the web app.

Within the citekey management menu (under Citations in Papers Settings), you can choose to use the original citekey or to overwrite it upon import. Make sure to first enable citekey management.

Autogenerating of citekeys is only available for personal libraries, though citekeys can be added manually in shared libraries. The reason for this is that users may have different rules for citekey generation that would conflict/change ones being in use by the team.

To manually add/edit a citekey, you simply click on the "Edit" pane and scroll to the citekey field, make your edits then click save.
